My name is Meg. I live in Plattsburgh, NY and work at the local Community College in the Development office. i have a Bachelors in Women Studies and English LIt and am working on my Masters in English Language and English Lit.  I hope to teach and would like to stay at the Community College level. Prior to my work at the college i was the director of a humane society for over 6 years.

i have been married for almost 8 years and am mama to a spirited little boy who just turned 3.  We have 3 aging dogs and a few cats.

Working full time, going to grad school and being a devoted and adoring parent leaves me little extra time, but when i get it i love to read, garden, and we live in a big, old house (1800's) so we're usually in the midst of some project or repair...

You were director for a humane society? Was it a difficult job? I mean, having to see all those animals without homes.

An 1800's home? Sounds fantastic. We currently live (my husband and I) in a house from 1954, but we almost purchased a one room schoolhouse, but realized it was too small and too big of an undertaking so fresh out of college. Someday...

yeah, i worked at the shelter for almost 7 yrs and was director for about 6 of that time. honestly, it was much more than a profession and certainly it was both difficult and rewarding. i encountered the question: "How do you do it?" over and over agian when i was in the field and my response was pretty much--i don't know how not to. i saw some really devestating things, but i was a compassionate, loving person for many animals who had never expereinced compassion in their lives. i am fair and treated them all the same, no matter age, tempermant, etc., i could do it, because who else would??? And, if i had to put someone down-which was pretty rare--i knew it had to be done and it was done with the same amount of comapssion as the rest of my job. i held them in my arms, talked to them, apologized and cried for them--it sucked to be frank, but i've seen a lot of shelters where there's no dignity in life or death and i made sure in my tenure that this was not the case for over 900 of them. Probably a way longer response than you were looking for and the job had many rewards that i still reap today. last weekend i took my son to the farmer's market and one of the organic farmers had this beautiful dog--she came up and licked my son's face and he petted her and i got to tell him that she used to have a really sad life and that i helped rescue her and found her the family she has now.

on the home front--sounds fantastic is right! and it does have a lot of charm--some days outweighed by quirks and projects. it just seems that whenever i think i'll get to do something i want, something neccessary needs to be repaired or replaced, so your 1954 house sounds pretty good coming off a weeked of tree removal, leading to the discovery of eaves needing to be replaced and i will once again not get a new bath tub...i would have jumped all over a one room school house--you were smart to wait! :)
