Wiki Project GuidelinesFAQ

Given our discussion on the first day of class, here are some thoughts about how to approach the wiki project. In addition, if you have questions related to the assignment itself or technical questions regarding the wiki, post them in the FAQ section below and I will seek to answer them.

 

General Guidelines

 

As a contributor to the wiki you have two basic options:

  1. Create a new page     
  2. Add to/Edit an existing page.

 

Both options are acceptable and necessary. When one looks at a large wiki (e.g. Wikipedia) one discovers that the large majority of users are people with narrow interests who will contribute new pages or material in a particular area. A smaller group of superusers do the important work of linking together others contributions, editing, and general organizing the larger collection. We're a small wiki project, but we still need to do both of these activities.

 

Probably the most difficult task you will encounter is figuring out how to approach your colleagues' contributions. The saving grace is that the wiki maintains a history, so nothing deleted is really lost. I imagine most of the time you will make contributions that are not worrisome to you (e.g. simple edits, elaborations of points, adding new material, etc.). I would ask that you avoid editing texts where you believe you and other author have an "honest disagreement." Instead, you could add a new page or new part of an existing page where you can express your view. If you want to make an edit but are unsure, I encourage you to go ahead, but then you should add a comment at the bottom of the page explaining your action (n.b. every page has a comment function, which you can find by scrolling to the bottom of this page while in VIEW rather than EDIT).


Remember audience and purpose: this is a publicly available web site. Our intention is to provide useful information for others doing research in these areas, as well as for ourselves.
