"Desiring Agency: Limiting Metaphors and Enabling Constraints in Dawkins and Deleuze/Guattari",  Substance 94/95 (2001): 144-159. I don't know that this solves Hayles' understanding of Deleuze & Guattari's Bodies Without Organs (first referenced on Hayles p.4), but it does provide another elucidation to look at <Nick>.
