Getting Started in Second Life

Page history last edited by Alex Reid 15 years, 2 months ago

This page provides instructions for creating an account and getting into Second Life.

  1. Go to SecondLife.com and create a free account.
  2. Download and install the client software on your computer. The Second Life website offers directions on doing this. (Please note that if your computer is not compatible with the software, or if you don't have high-speed internet connection, you can access Second Life through computers on campus. You will need to install the client software on a USB flash drive. You should be able to copy the Second Life program from your flash drive onto the desktop and run it from there. Let me know if you have problems with this or need to borrow a flash drive.)
  3. Run the application, log into Second Life, and proceed through the Orientation Island (see video below).

Making Friends and Joining Groups

  1. If you know the name of the person you want to friend (like me, Alex Asylum), it's easy. When you are in-world, you will note a SEARCH button at the bottom of the screen. Click the button and the search window will open. You will note there are several ways to search, including searching for people. Search for me by name. Click on my name. Another window will come up and you will see a button where you can request to friend me.
  2. Joining a group is a similar process. Search for the group you want to join (e.g. SUNY Cortland SL Pilot). Click on the group name. Another window opens up, and there will be a button where you can join the group.

Second Life Reviews:  To get a second opinion about second life (no pun intended) go to www.gamespot.com.  There you'll find nasty reviews alongside two thumbs up reviews.  Enjoy!
