Week One Reading
Introduction plus Chapters 1-3
For Class on Tuesday
As I mentioned two weeks ago, I am thinking that you will encounter this text as the most challenging read of the semester, particularly if you have had limited exposure to Deleuze and Guattari (and their referents, e.g., Spinoza, Liebniz, Bergson, Simondon, etc.). In my view, the best way to approach this text is to take cuts at it. So here are a few passages I plan to discuss in class. I'm hoping you might add some suggestions as well.
- In the introduction, Massumi lists 15 points in relation to Bergson (pp. 6-13). I was especially interested in point 6, 7, 8, and 13.
- In chapter one, my focus was on part II (pp 28-39), especially 29-30 & 35.
- In chapter two, (pp 57-64): quasi-corporeality, proprioception, viscerality, exemplary event.
- In chapter three, part-subject, part-object, potential, perception through the parable of soccer (pp. 72-80)
